Notice regarding Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Card

       This is to inform that from 31st May 2023 plurilingual Birth certificates, Marriage certificates and Death certificates, etc. will not be accepted for OCI registrations. Only the documents which are translated into English from the original French version will be accepted.

Overview

The OCI Card is a multiple entry life-long visa which enables the holder to have unlimited travel and stay in India. On change of passport, one has to apply for a new OCI Card corresponding to the new passport.

Eligibility for an OCI card

A foreign national is eligible to apply for an OCI card if he/she:

  • Was a citizen of India on or at any time after the commencement of the Constitution; or
  • Was eligible to become a citizen of India at the time of the commencement of the Constitution; or
  • Belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947; or
  • Who is a child or a grandchild or a great grandchild of such a citizen mentioned above; or
  • A person who is a minor child of a person mentioned above; or
  • A person who is a minor child and whose both parents are citizens of India or one of the parents is a citizen of India; or
  • A spouse of foreign origin of a citizen of India or spouse of foreign origin of an Overseas Citizen of India cardholder registered under section 7A and whose marriage has been registered and subsisted for a continuous period of not less than two years immediately preceding the presentation of the application under this section:

You are not eligible to apply for an OCI card in the following cases:

  • The applicant will not be eligible for OCI, if the applicant/their parents had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh.
  • Foreign Defence/Military/Police/ex-Defence personnel and the persons working with security agencies are not eligible for OCI card

The Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify the date from which the existing Persons of Indian Origin cardholders shall be deemed to be Overseas Citizens of India cardholders.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REGISTRATION (New OCI Card and OCI Miscellaneous Services)

  • The applicant must fill in the application form online and upload all the requisite documents (self-attested along with English translation), photograph and signature (in case of minors who cannot sign, left hand thumb impression) along with the application. Go to the following link
  • After submitting the application online including documents, photograph and signature, the application must then be printed, dated and signed (signature should be within the box meant for that purpose) and submitted in one set along with the original and photocopies of documents (self-attested along with English translation) at the Consulate from Monday to Friday (09.00 am to 12.00 pm) for prior verification.
  • If the Consulate finds any deficiency in the application/uploaded documents/photograph/signature, we shall inform the applicant via email or telephone. After receipt of all the required documents, the application shall be processed and the originals of the supporting documents will be returned to the applicant.

Kindly note that an 0.C.I. card is a life-long visa and is issued normally within 30-45 working days, subject to receipt of OCI cards from the Ministry. However where cases are referred to the other Indian Missions concerned, OCI applications are processed on receipt of clearance from the Mission/Post concerned.

Documents required for new OCI Card: (to be uploaded online)

  • Print of duly filled in and signed application form (form to be filled online only)
  • French passport (original + copy of data page)
  • Livret de famille (original + copy)
  • Official document proving indian origin of the applicant, origin of the parent or the grand parent. Previous Indian Passport, birth certificate, livret de famille, etc. (original + copy)**
  • Naturalisation certificate (certificat de nationalite francaise-) (original + English translation+copy)**
  • Two recent photographs with light colored background (51mmx 51mm & identical)

Documents required for Miscellaneous OCI Services: (to be uploaded online)

  • Print of duly filled in and signed application form (form to be filled online only)
  • French passport (original + copy of data page)
  • Current OCI Card and self-attested copy (first and last page)

Additional Documents: (to be uploaded online)

If the applicant has changed the address:

  • A proof of address (eg. Recent utility bill)

If the applicant has changed the name:

  • Documents justifying the change of name

In case of change of Passport Number:

  • Originals and copies of both old and new Passports

In case the applicant has lost the current OCI Card:

  • The original Police report
  • A copy of lost OCI Card

Applicants are advised to ensure accuracy of details entered in the Online form.
